Lummis House, Stone house in Highland Park, Los Angeles, United States.
The Lummis House is a two-story residential structure in the Highland Park neighborhood built from local stones and bricks with rustic architectural features. The design incorporates handcrafted wood beams and blends Native American and Spanish colonial influences throughout its composition.
Charles Fletcher Lummis constructed the house between 1897 and 1910, drawing on building traditions influenced by Native American and Spanish colonial heritage. The project took shape during a period when California was expanding rapidly and traditional craftsmanship still mattered.
The house served as a gathering place for artists, writers, and community leaders who helped shape Southern California's cultural development. Visitors can still sense the creative energy that filled these rooms during its heyday.
The house welcomes visitors on specific days of the week for guided tours through the interior and native plant gardens. It helps to check in advance which days and times tours are available.
Every stone used in construction was personally collected by Charles Fletcher Lummis over a 13-year period from the nearby Arroyo Seco stream. This painstaking effort gives the building an unusual story of personal dedication and patient craftsmanship.
