Altadena sits at the base of the San Gabriel Mountains and spreads across an area with wooded canyons and residential streets that climb toward mountain trails. The community shows a mix of older bungalows and newer homes on large lots among oak and pine trees.
Benjamin Eaton built irrigation systems from Arroyo Seco and Eaton Canyon during the 1860s, allowing permanent settlement. The community grew in the early 20th century as citrus groves and residential neighborhoods shaped the area.
Christmas Tree Lane has displayed illuminated cedar trees every winter for over a century, drawing visitors from across California. Residents maintain this tradition through local committees and an annual ceremony to light the first trees.
Most streets run east to west along mountain slopes, while north to south avenues connect to neighboring Pasadena. Parking near trailheads fills quickly on weekends, so arriving early is advisable.
In 2022, the area transferred part of its land back to the Tongva people, marking the first such return since European arrival. This land restitution also included a ceremony with traditional Tongva elders and local government representatives.
