Soka University of America, Private liberal arts college in Aliso Viejo, California.
Soka University of America is a private college in Aliso Viejo, California, that spreads across roughly 42 hectares (103 acres) of land. The buildings are grouped around a central area with pathways, lawns, and outdoor spaces where students gather between classes.
The campus opened its doors in 2001 with an initial group of 120 students from 18 different countries and 18 US states. The founding was initiated by Buddhist educators from Japan who sought to create a humanistic education institution in North America.
The name comes from a Japanese word meaning value creation, and the campus is home to students from more than three dozen countries. The community operates under an honor code that emphasizes academic integrity and mutual respect in daily interactions.
Visitors can walk around the campus, but should note that this is an active educational institution with limited public access. A stroll along the main pathways gives a sense of the layout and architecture.
Every enrolled student receives support for one semester abroad, with tuition, housing, and travel costs included in regular fees. The student-to-faculty ratio stands at seven to one, allowing for small seminar groups averaging twelve people.
