San Antonio Dam, Flood control dam in San Bernardino County, United States
San Antonio Dam is a flood control structure built across San Antonio Creek using earth and rock fill. The embankment rises above the streambed to manage runoff flowing from the San Gabriel Mountains.
Construction of the dam ran from 1952 to 1956 following earlier flood control legislation. The project was built in response to growing population and development needs in the expanding region.
The dam serves as a central element in regional water management, protecting over two million residents across multiple counties from potential flooding events.
The dam remains mostly dry outside of heavy rain periods and is best viewed from nearby roads that run along the structure. The surrounding area offers some vantage points to see the full embankment and the creek valley below.
Building this structure demanded immense quantities of material, with over 6 million cubic yards of earth and rock placed in the main embankment. A concrete spillway on the western section discharges excess water during heavy rain events.
