Ontario Peak, Mountain summit in San Gabriel Mountains, California, US
Ontario Peak is a summit in the San Gabriel Mountains that rises to 8,693 feet (2,648 meters). The mountain is accessed via steep trails that pass through dense forest before reaching exposed rocky terrain near the top.
The peak was named by the Chaffey brothers after their Canadian home, the Province of Ontario. These brothers worked in the region during the late 1800s and left their mark on several local place names.
Local hiking groups regularly organize guided expeditions to Ontario Peak, fostering a strong outdoor recreation community in Southern California.
The hike takes about seven hours for the complete route and requires substantial water and good physical fitness. Starting early from Icehouse Canyon is important as the trail is demanding and you need adequate time to complete the journey safely.
On clear days you can see Mount Baldy, Cucamonga Peak, and the Pacific Ocean all from the summit. This rare view makes the climb worthwhile for many hikers since three major landmarks become visible in a single journey.
