Chaffey College, community college in Rancho Cucamonga
Chaffey College is a public community college in Rancho Cucamonga, in the Inland Empire region of Southern California, offering two-year academic and vocational programs. The campus is made up of several buildings arranged across a large, open site, with classrooms, science labs, a library, and student support facilities.
The college was founded in 1883, making it one of the oldest institutions of its kind in California. It grew steadily throughout the 20th century as the Inland Empire region expanded and more residents sought accessible education close to home.
The college takes its name from George Chaffey, a Canadian engineer who helped develop the irrigation systems that made farming possible in the Inland Empire. On campus today, students from the surrounding communities mix across age groups, many attending classes alongside full-time jobs.
The campus sits along a main road in Rancho Cucamonga and can be reached by car or public transit, with parking lots near the main entrance. Buildings are spread out, so comfortable footwear is helpful if you plan to move between departments or facilities.
When it opened in 1883, Chaffey College admitted men and women equally at a time when most California institutions did not. This made it a rare example of open access to higher education in the American West during the 19th century.
