Colorado River Delta

The Colorado River Delta is a complex network of channels and wetlands where the Colorado River meets the Gulf of California. The area spans across Baja California and Sonora with flat, water-filled landscapes featuring reed beds and open water sections.

The construction of Hoover Dam in the 1930s transformed the delta's ecosystem by dramatically reducing wetlands to roughly five percent of their original size. This major shift shaped the region's future and made protection efforts necessary for what remained.

The Cocopah people shaped this landscape for centuries through farming methods that worked with the river's seasonal patterns. Their knowledge of harvesting wild plants and crops remains part of how locals understand this territory today.

The most accessible points are along the riverbanks where observation areas and pathways have been set up. The best time to visit is during migration season when bird activity peaks and the wetlands feel most alive with movement.

This place is home to around 380 bird species, making it extraordinary for bird watchers and nature enthusiasts. Shell deposits scattered throughout the delta tell the story of marine life that once thrived in this desert setting.
