Sun City, Retirement community in Maricopa County, Arizona.
Sun City is a planned community northwest of Phoenix featuring residential neighborhoods, eight golf courses, and several recreation centers spread throughout the area. The layout is organized around shopping centers and recreational facilities that serve the population.
The development began in 1959 when a company purchased ranches and transformed the agricultural land into a planned residential community. This was one of the first attempts to design a neighborhood specifically for older adults.
The community was designed as a retreat for older adults, and this purpose shapes daily life here. You will see residents gathering for golf, joining clubs, and participating in organized recreational activities throughout the neighborhood.
The community is located about 20 miles (32 km) northwest of downtown Phoenix and is easily accessible by car. Bus service connects major areas, though having a vehicle makes getting around more convenient.
The community was created in the mid-1900s as a prototype for age-focused residential design and became a model copied by similar projects worldwide. The original planning approach continues to influence how neighborhoods for older residents are designed today.
