Sahuaro Ranch, Historic ranch in Glendale, United States
Sahuaro Ranch is a 17-acre property with multiple preserved buildings, including a main house, barns, fruit packing facilities, and ornamental gardens with citrus groves. The grounds preserve the infrastructure of a significant agricultural operation from the late 1800s.
William Henry Bartlett established the ranch in 1886 and transformed desert land into agricultural fields after the Arizona Canal was completed in 1885. The property rapidly developed into a major agricultural operation following the availability of irrigation water from this infrastructure project.
The property displays building styles from different time periods and preserves traditional construction methods alongside agricultural practices from the late 1800s. The structures offer insight into the daily life and work of a productive farming community of that era.
The grounds are open daily from 6 AM to sunset with no admission fees. Visitors can explore the historic buildings, gardens, and educational exhibits, though comfortable shoes are recommended since the property covers substantial ground.
The ranch operated the largest fruit packing facility in Salt River Valley during the 1890s, processing citrus from its extensive orchards. This role as a regional processing hub made it an important economic center for the growing agricultural region.
