The Deer Valley Petroglyph Preserve contains 1,500 ancient petroglyphs carved on 500 basalt boulders across 47 acres of desert landscape.
Archaeological investigations in 1980 by the US Army Corps of Engineers revealed multiple artifacts and features before the construction of Adobe Dam at Hedgpeth Hills.
The petroglyphs represent three archaeological traditions: Western Archaic, Hohokam, and Patayan, with 37 different types of design elements identified through research.
The preserve operates Wednesday through Saturday from 8:00 AM to 2:00 PM, with facilities including parking areas, restrooms, and a self-guided quarter-mile nature trail.
Digital documentation of the rock art continues through Arizona State University, which manages the preserve through its School of Human Evolution and Social Change.
