Phoenix Mountain Preserve

Phoenix Mountain Preserve is a group of protected areas in Phoenix encompassing over 7,000 acres of desert terrain with mountain peaks, native plants, and wildlife throughout. The land is crossed by multiple access points with parking facilities, from which more than 20 miles of trails branch out for various skill levels.

Protection efforts started in 1994 to preserve the natural desert landscape from urban development. This action allowed public access to outdoor spaces while safeguarding the region's natural resources.

The preserve offers a place where visitors experience the Sonoran Desert firsthand and learn from interpretive signs about how this landscape works. People use the trails to explore nature and feel the rhythm of the desert throughout their day.

The trails require different levels of preparation depending on which route you choose, so it helps to check the difficulty beforehand. Comfortable hiking shoes, plenty of water, and sun protection matter on all paths since the desert sun is intense.

Wildlife watching is part of the everyday experience here, as rabbits, coyotes, and many bird species roam between the mountains. Early morning hours often offer the best chances to spot these animals without disturbing them.
