Camelback Mountain, Mountain summit in Phoenix, United States.
Camelback Mountain rises 2707 feet (825 meters) above the desert floor, made of red sandstone and granite that shape its profile. The summit overlooks Phoenix and the surrounding Sonoran Desert with its cactus and rocky slopes.
The Hohokam used caves on the slope for ceremonies until they left the region in the 14th century. Phoenix protected the peak in 1968 as part of the natural heritage of Arizona.
Its name comes from the shape, which looks like the profile of a resting camel when viewed from the east. Locals often hike early in the morning or late afternoon when the heat subsides.
The Echo Canyon Trail runs 1.14 miles (1.8 kilometers) to the summit, while the Cholla Trail measures 1.4 miles (2.3 kilometers), both requiring good fitness. Water and sun protection are necessary, especially during summer months when temperatures rise sharply.
A rock formation on the northern slope is called the Praying Monk and shows the outline of a kneeling person. This silhouette stands out especially when the sun sits low and shadows highlight the contours.
