Karsten Golf Course, Golf course in Tempe, US.
Karsten Golf Course was an 18-hole golf course in Tempe, Arizona, situated along East Rio Salado Parkway near the Arizona State University campus. Designed by Pete Dye, the layout featured water hazards and sand bunkers that created varying levels of difficulty across the holes.
The course opened in 1989 and was named after Karsten Solheim, the founder of PING golf equipment, who had strong ties to Arizona State University. It closed in 2019 after about three decades of use.
The course served as the home of the Arizona State University golf team, giving it a strong connection to college golf in the United States. Players who trained there went on to compete at the professional level, which made the place a reference point in the sport.
The course closed in 2019 and is no longer open to visitors, so there is nothing to see or play on site today. Anyone interested in its history or legacy can look to Arizona State University or golf history resources for more context.
Pete Dye was known for designing courses that professionals found extremely demanding, yet Karsten was considered one of his more approachable works. Even so, the 16th hole, a par three, earned a reputation among golfers for being one of the harder tests on the course.
