Established in 1789 as a military outpost chapel, the current structure was built in 1877 after previous buildings succumbed to weather and Rio Grande floods.
The chapel maintains regular Mass services and continues to function as a spiritual center for the San Elizario community, preserving Spanish colonial traditions.
Located at 1556 San Elizario Road, the chapel opens Monday through Friday from 7:00 AM to 9:30 AM, with weekend Mass services at similar hours.
The chapel stands as one of the last remaining examples of late adobe construction in West Texas, featuring four vertical bells and four horizontal buttresses.
