Organ Mountains, Mountain range in southern New Mexico, United States.

The Organ Mountains are a granite range in southern New Mexico with distinctive sharp spires rising above the surrounding desert basin. The peaks form jagged ridgelines with steep vertical rock formations creating a dramatic silhouette against the sky.

People first inhabited this region during the Paleoindian period, with the Jornada Mogollon culture later developing agricultural settlements here. These early inhabitants left behind archaeological traces that reveal the long span of human occupation in the area.

The mountains take their name from granite spires that resemble organ pipes, a visual similarity that strikes visitors immediately when viewing the peaks. This shape has shaped how locals and travelers think about and describe the range.

The best time to explore is early morning when temperatures are cooler and views are clearest. Bring plenty of water and be prepared for dry terrain with rocky trails throughout the range.

The region supports around 870 plant species, including the evening-primrose that grows nowhere else on Earth. This endemic plant reveals how special the growing conditions are in this mountain environment.
