Biggs Army Airfield, airport
Biggs Army Airfield is an active military airfield located within Fort Bliss, near El Paso in Texas. It has runways, hangars, and maintenance facilities that support Army helicopters and transport aircraft based there.
The airfield was founded in the 1920s to support early military aviation along the Texas-Mexico border region. Over the following decades it grew steadily alongside Fort Bliss and adapted to changing Army needs.
Biggs Army Airfield takes its name from Lieutenant James Biggs, a pilot killed in World War I. His name remains present on the base and connects the site to the early days of military aviation in the American Southwest.
The airfield is an active military installation and is not open to the public without prior authorization. Anyone planning a visit should arrange official permission through Fort Bliss and be prepared to follow all security requirements on arrival.
During the 1940s, Biggs also served briefly as the commercial airport for El Paso before the city built its own dedicated facility. This shared use between the military and civilian passengers was uncommon and reflects how young the regional aviation network was at that time.
