Fort Bliss, Military base in El Paso County, United States
Fort Bliss is a military base in El Paso County that spreads across Texas and New Mexico. The grounds include desert landscapes, mountain ranges, and training areas for different military units.
The installation began in 1849 during westward expansion and took its name from an officer who never set foot there. Over time it grew from a small outpost into one of the largest facilities of its kind.
The post serves as a training ground for the German Air Force, which conducts joint exercises with American forces. German pilots regularly work alongside local units and use the open terrain for flight operations.
The area remains largely closed to the public except during certain events or with permission. Visitors to the region should prepare for hot temperatures and dry weather, especially in summer.
The airspace above the grounds serves as a testing zone for missile systems and artillery, making it the largest restricted area of its kind in the continental part of the country. Aircraft must fly wide detours around the zone when exercises take place.
