Blue Mesa Observatory, Astronomical observatory in Sierra de las Uvas, New Mexico, United States
Blue Mesa Observatory is an astronomical facility situated on Magdalena Peak in the Sierra de las Uvas mountains northwest of Las Cruces. The site featured a reflector telescope designed to observe planets and stars from a location with minimal light interference from nearby cities.
The facility was established in 1967 and conducted astronomical research until 1993, when the Federal Aviation Administration acquired the site for radar operations. This transition marked the end of the observatory's decades of studying the night sky from this mountain location.
The facility contributed to astronomical research through its 0.61-meter Cassegrain reflector telescope, supporting studies of planetary atmospheres and celestial observations.
The site sits at elevation on a mountain with clear views of the night sky and minimal light pollution from surrounding areas. Visitors should prepare for rugged terrain and cool mountain weather regardless of the season.
The main telescope from the closed facility did not end up in storage or disposal but was relocated to continue its astronomy work at another observatory in Kansas. This equipment has been documenting celestial observations for decades beyond the mountain location.
