Parque nacional Volcán Mombacho, National park and nature reserve in Granada Department, Nicaragua.
Volcán Mombacho is a 1,344-meter (4,410-foot) volcano with four craters surrounded by thick cloud forest. Trails crisscross the mountain through forest sections and coffee farms on the slopes.
The mountain formed through ancient volcanic activity, with the last recorded eruption happening in 1570. The four craters visible today took shape during this geological past.
The slopes host traditional coffee farming where local families use methods passed down through generations and harvest by hand. This agricultural practice shapes how the mountain looks and how people interact with the land.
The park is best explored on foot, with trails ranging from easy to challenging for different fitness levels. Higher areas are cooler and wetter, so waterproof clothing is useful.
The Mombacho salamander lives nowhere else on Earth and exists only here in the cloud forest. This species found nowhere else makes the mountain biologically special.
