Concepción, Active stratovolcano in Altagracia, Nicaragua
Concepción is an active stratovolcano on Ometepe Island in Lake Nicaragua, rising to about 1,610 meters. It forms the northern section of the island and has a steep, conical shape with multiple craters at its summit.
The volcano experienced its first recorded eruption in 1883 and has shown continuous volcanic activity ever since. Over 25 eruptions have been documented through May 2024, regularly shaping the surrounding landscape.
Communities living around the volcano work the rich volcanic soil for crops and have adapted their ways to living in an active geological zone. People here have learned to live alongside natural forces and arrange their farming around what the land offers.
Starting your hike early in the morning helps you avoid afternoon heat and sudden weather changes on the mountain. Sturdy footwear, plenty of water, and a local guide are essential for safely handling the demanding climb to the top.
The volcano sits on a foundation of lake sediment that reaches about a kilometer deep beneath the surface. This unusual base sets it apart from neighboring volcanoes, which developed on different geological foundations.
