San Nicolás is a municipality in Santa Bárbara Department in western Honduras. The town functions as a local administrative center serving the surrounding communities and rural areas.
The municipality was officially established on February 20, 1850, following Spanish colonial settlement in the former Tencoa region. Its founding was part of Honduras administrative reorganization during the 19th century.
The population of 16,539 residents includes a composition of 81.42% Mestizo, 17.80% White, and smaller percentages of Indigenous and Afro-Honduran communities.
