Farallones de Cali National Natural Park, Protected area in Valle del Cauca, Colombia
Farallones de Cali National Natural Park is a protected area in the mountainous region of Valle del Cauca spanning from lowlands to high-altitude zones. The park serves as a dividing line between two major water systems that flow toward different parts of Colombia.
The park was established in 1968 to protect Colombia's water sources and forest cover from overuse. Since then it has remained central to safeguarding these ecosystems.
The Cholo communities have lived in the lower river valleys for generations, and their presence shapes how people interact with the land and forests around them.
Access requires hiring experienced local guides who know the authorized trails and can help with navigation. Wear sturdy boots, bring waterproof clothing, and carry enough water since the terrain is steep and weather can change quickly.
The park contains four distinct altitude zones with their own wildlife and plants, ranging from tropical rainforest in the lowlands to high mountain grassland above 3,500 meters. This extreme variety occurs in a relatively small area because of the steep elevation changes.
