Commune 13 San Javier, Urban district in Medellín, Colombia
Commune 13 San Javier is a hillside district in Medellín, Colombia, accessed through a system of staircases, escalators and cable car stations. The densely built residential buildings spread across multiple levels and house around 160,000 people.
The settlement began in 1946 when displaced families formed a housing cooperative and settled on the site of a former farming area called Las Granjas. Over the following decades, the district grew steadily through migration and developed into a densely populated area on the city outskirts.
Street art transforms building facades into large-scale paintings that tell stories from the neighborhood and are created by residents themselves. Hip-hop dancers and musicians regularly perform on public squares along the staircases, turning the streets into a lively meeting place.
The outdoor cable car and escalator systems are freely accessible and greatly reduce the climb through the steep terrain. It is best to visit the district during daytime in good weather, as paths can become slippery when it rains.
Former residents personally guide visitors through the narrow lanes and share firsthand accounts of how the place has changed over recent years. These walks offer a direct insight into daily life and the transformations many families here have witnessed.
