Chipaque, Mountain municipality in Cundinamarca, Colombia
Chipaque is a mountain municipality in Cundinamarca situated at approximately 2160 meters elevation in the eastern Andes range. The town spreads across mountainous terrain with rural communities and agricultural areas throughout the region.
Spanish conquistador Juan Tafur built the first church in Chipaque in 1538, marking the beginning of Christian settlement in the area. Official establishment as a municipality occurred in 1600 under administrator Luis Enríquez.
The name Chipaque comes from the Chibcha language and means forest of our ancestors. Local residents maintain this connection to their indigenous past in their daily life.
The town sits about 27 kilometers east of Bogotá and is accessible through regional transportation routes. The cool mountain climate with average temperatures around 13 degrees Celsius requires warm clothing, especially for visits to higher elevations.
The municipal flag displays yellow and green bands representing local wealth and fertility, with a white triangle positioned at the pole side. These symbols tell the story of the area's economic importance and natural resources.
