Parc national naturel Selva de Florencia, Protected rainforest area in Caldas, Colombia.
Parque nacional natural Selva de Florencia is a protected area on the eastern slopes of the Central Cordillera in the Caldas department of Colombia. The terrain is hilly and wet, covered in dense montane forest that spans several altitude zones.
Much of this land was farmed until the second half of the 20th century, when displacement and armed conflict caused many farms to be abandoned. Without human management, the forest gradually recovered and formed the dense woodland that exists today.
Communities near the park have long depended on the forest for water and food, and that connection still shapes how people live in the surrounding villages. Locals tend to speak of the forest as something they share rather than something set apart from them.
The park is reached via the municipality of La Dorada, from where local roads lead toward the Florencia district. The trails are steep and often wet, so sturdy footwear and rain gear are a practical necessity.
The Selva de Florencia holds the highest known concentration of frog species recorded in any single area of Colombia. A large share of those species are found nowhere else on Earth, making this forest one of the most frog-rich places on the planet.
