Norcasia is a municipality in Caldas department within Colombia's Andes, situated at roughly 700 meters elevation amid mountainous terrain. The area spans several hundred square kilometers and connects nearby villages through paved roads linking to La Dorada, Victoria, and Samana.
The settlement began in 1895 when explorers arrived seeking natural resources, establishing a permanent foothold in the region. The area gained official municipality status more than a century later in 1999.
The town hosts yearly celebrations featuring horse shows and traditional sports that reflect how locals value their rural heritage. These gatherings bring the community together to showcase crafts and skills passed down through generations.
When visiting, keep in mind that the mountainous setting means roads wind through the landscape and travel takes longer than in flatter areas. The drier months offer better conditions for exploring, since rain can make roads slippery.
Within this municipality stands a large dam rising over 100 meters high, representing one of the region's most significant engineering works. This hydroelectric installation provides electricity to a large portion of the country.
