Embalse del Peñol, Artificial reservoir in Eastern Antioquia, Colombia.
Embalse del Peñol sits at an elevation of 1,880 meters (6,170 feet) in the mountains of Antioquia, stretching through several winding arms between forested hills. The water surrounds small islands and peninsulas formed by the flooding of valleys.
Construction of the Punchiná Dam began in 1979 and created this reservoir for power generation in the region. The project altered the landscape and led to the relocation of several villages to higher ground.
The reservoir shape mirrors the mountains around Guatapé, and along its winding shoreline the rebuilt town centers and boat docks have taken form. On calm days visitors can see the water reflecting the steep slopes and clouds above the peaks.
Visitors can take boat trips from Guatapé to explore the different arms and inlets of the lake. Water conditions change with the season, so it is wise to check with local operators for current conditions.
The water surface has a highly branched shape with countless coves and promontories due to the flooded valleys. This structure creates ever-changing views as one travels by boat along the shores.
