Atenas

Atenas is an administrative center in Alajuela Province situated on high ground in Costa Rica's central valley. The town sits surrounded by mountain ridges with coffee farms spread across its territory, covering roughly 9.76 square kilometers of inhabited land.

The settlement emerged in the 1800s as an important stop on the route where oxcarts transported coffee from the surrounding highlands toward coastal ports. This trade activity shaped the town's early growth and development.

The main square serves as a gathering place where locals meet regularly, and on market days farmers sell produce from the region directly at their stalls. The traditional church with its palms shapes the town's character and shows how important faith remains to the community.
