Acosta Canton, Administrative canton in San José Province, Costa Rica.
Acosta Canton is an administrative region in San José Province that spans mountainous terrain between two river valleys. The territory divides into five districts connected by national highways that run through the landscape.
The region gained its administrative status in 1910 and became the twelfth such entity in the province. This establishment formalized governance of rural communities that had previously operated independently.
The area maintains a rural character shaped by farming communities and village traditions that define daily life here. Local customs revolve around agriculture and seasonal practices that have remained central to the region for generations.
The five district towns are reasonably accessible via national highways, which simplifies travel across the region. Visitors should expect winding mountain roads and changeable weather conditions that affect travel times.
The higher elevation creates noticeably cooler temperatures and distinct plant life compared to lower-lying regions nearby. This altitude difference makes the climate here notably different from other parts of the country.
