Moñitos, Administrative division in Córdoba, Colombia.
Moñitos is a coastal municipality in the Córdoba department, situated along the Caribbean coast of northern Colombia. The territory covers a stretch of shoreline as well as inland areas used for both farming and fishing.
Moñitos was officially recognized as a separate municipality in the 20th century, after the area had long been part of a larger administrative unit. This change was part of Colombia's gradual effort to bring local government closer to smaller coastal communities.
Fishing shapes daily life here in a way that is easy to notice as a visitor, from the boats along the shore to the fresh catch sold at the local market. The rhythm of the day follows the sea, and many families have worked on the water for generations.
The town center is compact and easy to get around on foot, with most public offices located near the main square. The best time to walk around is in the morning, before the midday heat sets in.
The name Moñitos means small buns or small hair knots in Spanish, and according to local tradition it refers to the hairstyles worn by indigenous women who once lived in the area. This makes it one of the few Colombian town names with such a direct and personal connection to its original inhabitants.
