Ixcateopan, Archaeological site in Ixcateopan de Cuauhtémoc, Guerrero, Mexico.

Ixcateopan is an archaeological site with multiple rooms, red stucco floors, and open spaces set in the mountains of northern Guerrero. The structures show different building phases that developed over centuries.

The settlement emerged around 350 CE and served as a regional ceremonial center until 1521 CE for various groups. It played an important role under the Cohuixcas, Chontales, and later under Aztec rule.

The name Ixcateopan comes from Nahuatl and means Cotton Temple, reflecting the location's importance as a center for cotton cultivation and commerce. You can still sense how this trade shaped daily life at the site.

The site is located about 36 kilometers from Taxco in a mountainous area. Visitors should prepare for uneven terrain and elevation to fully explore the ruins and scattered artifacts.

The site shows evidence of intensive textile production through numerous malacates, small spinning weights scattered throughout. These finds reveal that weaving and thread-making were central activities in the economic life.
