Meztitla Scout Camp School, Scout campsite in Tepoztlán, Mexico.
Meztitla Scout Camp School is a campsite set within a natural area at the base of the Sierra de Ajusco-Chichinauhtzin mountain range near Tepoztlan. The grounds include cabins, dining halls, and recreational facilities designed primarily for scout groups and outdoor activities.
Paul E. Loewe donated the initial lands in 1956 to establish this national scout camp. The site later expanded through additional land purchases and became an established training location for youth groups.
The name Meztitla comes from the Nahuatl language and means Place of the Moon, inspired by cave paintings found on the surrounding cliff walls. Visitors can feel this connection to pre-Hispanic culture reflected in the land itself.
The facility requires advance reservations for accommodations and activities since it primarily serves organized groups. The best time to visit is during the drier months when pathways and facilities are most accessible.
The grounds sit within the Yautepec River watershed and integrate outdoor activities directly with environmental education programs. This educational approach makes it a place where young people learn practically about their natural surroundings.
