San Roque Plaza, Public plaza in central Guanajuato, Mexico
San Roque Plaza is a public square in central Guanajuato featuring a stone cross erected in 1952 at its center. Six wrought iron lampposts surround this cross, with the San Roque Temple rising prominently in the background.
This space was originally a cemetery linked to the religious building until urban development transformed it into a public plaza. The current layout and its structures evolved gradually to serve the modern character of the neighborhood.
Since 1953, this plaza serves as an open-air stage for Cervantine Interludes, theatrical performances that later inspired the International Cervantes Festival. The performances use the square's natural architecture as a backdrop for storytelling.
The plaza sits centrally in Guanajuato's historic district and is easily reached on foot, with shops and restaurants nearby. As a public space, it is open during the day and provides a good starting point for exploring the surrounding area.
The stone cross mirrors the design of the Cross of Cordoba in Spain and simultaneously serves as part of the stage scenery for theatrical performances. This dual purpose ties together art history with the performances that continue today.
