Indigenous leader Nicolás de San Luis Montañez established this settlement in 1551, beginning with a Mass that united Chichimecas and Otomí communities.
The National Cheese and Wine Fair, initiated in the 1980s, brings producers and visitors together to celebrate regional gastronomy and agricultural traditions.
