Tequisquiapan, Colonial municipality in Querétaro, Mexico
Tequisquiapan is a locality in Querétaro situated at about 1,880 meters (6,200 feet) elevation, featuring cobblestone streets and traditional rustic houses with wrought iron details and wooden window frames. It spreads across more than 200 hamlets and five main population centers that make up the municipality.
The settlement was founded in 1551 by indigenous leader Nicolás de San Luis Montañez, marked by a Mass that brought Chichimec and Otomí peoples together. This origin created a mixed community where both cultures came to live side by side.
The National Cheese and Wine Fair, which has taken place since the 1980s, brings producers and visitors together to celebrate regional foods and the community's connection to the land. The town has become known for how its people honor traditional farming practices and local craftsmanship through these gatherings.
The best way to explore is on foot, taking time to discover the different neighborhoods, though the elevation may affect your pace. Plan several days if you want to visit the various hamlets and main areas without rushing.
Mexican President Venustiano Carranza recognized this locality as the geographic center of Mexico, commemorating it with a monument in town. This marker often surprises visitors who discover they are standing at the heart of the country.
