El Cimatario National Park

El Cimatario National Park extends over 24 square kilometers of volcanic terrain with dry forests, cactus scrub, and induced pastures at elevations reaching 2400 meters.

The Spanish crown initially protected El Cimatario after conquest, but the area experienced resource depletion during modernization periods when timber extraction intensified for construction purposes.

Archaeological findings indicate that indigenous populations regarded this mountain as a sacred site connected to agricultural deities between 350 BC and the beginning of the Common Era.

Visitors reach the park through the Querétaro-Huimilpan highway, with park rangers offering free guided tours about local wildlife and vegetation throughout the grounds.

The geological composition reveals marine fossils in volcanic soils, indicating this area was once submerged under water millions of years ago.
