The municipality extends over 580 square kilometers of coastal territory, featuring numerous waterways and agricultural lands along the Papaloapan River region.

The municipal territory was originally inhabited by Totonac communities before Spanish colonization established it as a significant river port in the 16th century.

The municipality includes 185 communities where residents maintain traditions through annual festivals, particularly the Candlemas celebration from January to February.

The local government manages education facilities across 79 schools, offering services from primary education through university level instruction.

The municipality contains multiple river systems that support both commercial fishing operations and transportation routes throughout the Papaloapan region.
