Manga de Clavo, Historic hacienda in Vargas, Mexico
Manga de Clavo is a ruined hacienda in the state of Veracruz, Mexico, situated near the small town of Vargas. Stone foundations, broken walls, and a deep central well are the main features still visible on the property today.
Antonio López de Santa Anna took over the estate in 1825 and made it his main home for many years. During the decades that followed, he used it as a base between his different periods in power, giving the property a political weight rare for a rural estate.
The name Manga de Clavo refers to a thorny shrub common in the region, once used as a natural fence along rural properties. Visitors walking through the remains can still trace the outlines of the spaces that separated the working areas from the living quarters.
The site sits outside Veracruz and is most easily reached by car, following local roads through the town of Vargas. The area is rural and signage is sparse, so checking directions before setting out is a good idea.
Santa Anna had his amputated leg buried on the property after losing it in battle, before it was later moved to Mexico City. This makes the estate one of the very few rural sites in Mexico directly connected to such a personal and politically charged event.
