Manga de Clavo

Manga de Clavo is a ruined hacienda near Veracruz, with stone foundations and walls scattered across the property. A deep well marks the central core of what was once a substantial estate.

The estate was acquired in 1825 by Antonio Lopez de Santa Anna, who used it as both a private residence and seat of government. It became a center of political importance during a crucial period in Mexican history.

The hacienda represents a center of rural life in the 1800s, where work and domestic activity were woven together across the estate. Walking through the ruins today reveals the spaces where daily routines once shaped this community.

The site is located roughly 30 kilometers from Veracruz city and is reached by taking local roads that pass through the town of Vargas. A vehicle is recommended, as walking from the city would be impractical.

Santa Anna buried his amputated left leg on the property before it was later moved to Mexico City. This unusual act reveals something about how personal circumstances became intertwined with political power.
