Santuario de Nuestro Padre Jesús de Aquixtla

The Santuario de Nuestro Padre Jesús de Aquixtla is a sanctuary in Aquixtla Municipality featuring Spanish-Byzantine architecture with adobe walls decorated by continuous arches. Its interior is elaborately decorated and accessible through two entrance doors.

The chapel was built in 1878 and granted national sanctuary status by Apostolic Nuncio Christophe Pierre in 2016. This official recognition marked an important moment in the site's development.

Every year from December 28 to January 1, the venerated image travels to neighboring communities and returns on January 2 for celebrations known as the Festival of the Poor. This annual journey shows how the sanctuary remains woven into the daily religious life of the region.

The site includes an 800-step climb to Calvary where visitors can follow the 14 Stations of the Cross made from stone. Wear comfortable shoes and allow plenty of time for this demanding ascent.

Local tradition tells of a masterless mule that carried a box containing the bust of Jesus and became mysteriously too heavy to move further. This story reveals how deep religious conviction shaped the founding of this place.
