Museo Regional Potosino

The Museo Regional Potosino is an archaeological museum in San Luis Potosí that displays collections of pottery, skulls, and skeletal remains from the Huasteca region. The collection spans different periods and reveals the long history of settlements across this area.

The building began as a Franciscan monastery in 1590 before changing its purpose in the 20th century. Its conversion into a regional museum in 1952 opened these important collections to the public.

The exhibits feature objects from multiple indigenous civilizations that inhabited this region, including the Olmec, Totonac, and Mixtec peoples. The artifacts reveal how these cultures lived and what they valued in their daily lives.

The museum sits in Plaza Aranzazú within the historic center and is easy to reach on foot. Plan for at least 90 minutes to explore the permanent exhibits thoroughly.

The upper floor holds the Capilla de Aranzazú, a private chapel from the 18th century decorated in gold and turquoise tones. This sacred space once served as where newly ordained monks received their religious vows.
