LABNL Lab Cultural Ciudadano, Cultural center and citizen lab in Monterrey, Mexico.
LABNL is a citizen lab and cultural center housed in Monterrey's former Federal Palace building. The restored structure contains multiple workspaces and areas designed for people to collaborate on artistic and community projects.
The building was designed by architect Augusto Petricioli in the late 1920s and originally served as a federal government office. A major restoration in the 2020s transformed it into the center for citizens and cultural activity it is today.
The center organizes its work around four themes: City, Arts, Memory, and Digital Culture, each one encouraging people to engage with contemporary community questions. You see these ideas reflected in the exhibitions and projects happening throughout the restored building.
The space sits at the northern end of Macroplaza, Monterrey's central public area, making it easy to reach by foot. You can walk through the various rooms and join different exhibitions or events that happen regularly throughout the week.
The center holds the distinction of being Latin America's largest citizen laboratory, used by people from art, technology, and civil society. This range of voices means you see very different approaches to solving urban problems in the work displayed here.
