Old Basilica of Guadalupe, Monterrey

The Old Basilica of Guadalupe in Monterrey is a church structure featuring four octagonal towers at each corner and an impressive dome decorated with yellow and blue Talavera tiles. The interior space is defined by fifteen vaults that together create a grand religious setting.

Construction of the original church was ordered in 1867 by Bishop Francisco de Paula Verea y González. The structure was later replaced in 1895 by a larger building that stands today.

The basilica holds central importance in religious observances, particularly during the annual December 12 celebration honoring the Virgin of Guadalupe. Visitors experience the deep devotion that people show at this sacred site.

The site is easily accessible, as public transportation was expanded in 1905 to accommodate increasing visitor numbers. Today visitors will find good transit connections, especially during December celebrations.

A four-manual Wurlitzer organ was installed in 1931 and remains a distinguishing feature of this religious landmark. The organ produces rich, resonant tones that fill the space during services.
