Kohunlich, Maya ruins in Quintana Roo, Mexico.
The Temple of the Masks at Kohunlich features five remaining giant stucco masks flanking the central staircase, depicting the Maya sun god.
The settlement began around 200 BCE, reaching its peak between 250 and 600 CE, when most structures including temples and plazas were constructed.
The architectural design includes residential complexes, ceremonial platforms, and a water collection system with cisterns and a large reservoir for rainwater storage.
Located 65 kilometers west of Chetumal, the archaeological site opens daily from 8:00 AM to 5:00 PM with an entrance fee of 95 Mexican pesos.
The name Kohunlich derives from the English term 'Cohune Ridge,' referencing the palm trees growing in the surrounding landscape.
