The Blue Cenote contains fresh water that filters through limestone, creating a natural pool with transparent turquoise water surrounded by vertical rock walls.
The cenote formed through the collapse of limestone bedrock thousands of years ago, exposing the underground water system of the Yucatan Peninsula.
Ancient Maya communities considered this water-filled cavity a sacred portal to communicate with deities and performed ceremonies at its edges.
Visitors can access the cenote via a wooden staircase, and the water temperature remains constant at 75 degrees Fahrenheit throughout the year.
The depth of the Blue Cenote exceeds 100 feet, revealing submerged cave passages that connect to other water-filled caverns in the region.
