Blue Cenote, Natural sinkhole in Quintana Roo, Mexico.

Blue Cenote is a natural sinkhole in Quintana Roo filled with fresh water filtered through limestone, displaying brilliant turquoise coloring. Vertical rock walls surround the basin, and the water extends deep underground where submerged passages connect to other caverns in the area.

The sinkhole formed thousands of years ago when limestone bedrock collapsed, exposing the underground water systems beneath the Yucatan Peninsula. This geological event created the deep water cavity visible today.

For ancient Maya communities, this water source held spiritual meaning as a meeting place with the divine. People gathered at its edges to perform sacred ceremonies and honor their beliefs.

A wooden staircase provides safe access down to the water basin, and the temperature remains steady throughout the year. The consistent conditions make it accessible in any season without special preparation.

The sinkhole exceeds 30 meters in depth, with submerged passages extending to other water-filled caves in the region. These hidden connections reveal a complex underground network running beneath the entire area.
