Shipstern, Nature reserve in Corozal District, Belize.
Shipstern is a large protected nature reserve in northern Belize that encompasses forests, wetlands, and an extensive lagoon system. The area contains diverse habitats ranging from seasonally flooded woodlands to open water.
The area began in 1986 as a butterfly breeding center before shifting to international management in 1989. This transformation marked the start of its role as a protected natural space.
The reserve has shaped local connection to the land, with many families working in conservation roles here. Over time, this place has become central to how people in the region think about protecting their surroundings.
Access is best by road from Belize City heading toward Sarteneja village, where the entrance is located. Visitors should be prepared for weather-related conditions, especially during rainy season when paths can become muddy.
The reserve harbors all five cat species native to Belize, from jaguars to ocelots, within a relatively compact area. This makes it one of the few places where all these animals theoretically could be encountered.
