Taam ja’ Blue Hole, Blue hole in Chetumal Bay, Mexico
Taam ja' is a submarine sinkhole in Chetumal Bay that plunges approximately 423 meters into the seabed, making it among the deepest of its kind ever discovered. The formation features a circular opening with steep walls descending in distinct geological layers down to its lowest point.
The sinkhole was identified and first explored in 2023 by researchers from ECOSUR using advanced sonar scanning technology. This discovery marked a milestone in understanding the region's submarine geological formations.
Local fishermen from Quintana Roo communities assisted researchers in mapping the geological structure, sharing their maritime knowledge of the region.
Access is currently closed to the public for diving as researchers continue studying the site's ecological conditions and marine life. Visitors can view the location from boats or check with local authorities for any planned research activities.
The sinkhole's interior contains oxygen-free water layers that create a habitat for specialized microorganisms adapted to these extreme conditions. These anoxic zones reveal how life persists in ways that researchers are still learning to understand.
