Buckhorn Saloon & Museum, Museum and saloon in Downtown San Antonio, Texas.
Buckhorn Saloon & Museum displays thousands of animal specimens, including horns, antlers, and preserved wildlife from around the world across two floors of exhibition space. The building also houses the Texas Ranger Museum section and a working saloon with an attached gift shop.
Albert Friedrich opened the Buckhorn Saloon in 1881, where customers offered deer antlers and horns as payment for drinks. This unusual practice formed the foundation for the collection that has grown over more than a century.
The Texas Ranger Museum section tells the story of law enforcement through artifacts and weapons that document the rise of this famous police force. Visitors can see how these legendary lawmen worked across generations and what role they played in settling the frontier.
Access to both museums, the saloon, and the gift shop is available with a combination ticket purchased daily. Visitors should plan to spend a couple of hours to explore both exhibition areas, as the collections are large and detailed.
The collection includes unusual animal specimens such as a two-headed calf and an eight-legged lamb, which represent rare biological anomalies. Handcrafted artworks made from rattlesnake rattles show the creative use of these materials by local artisans.
