Tower Life Building, Gothic Revival skyscraper in Downtown San Antonio, United States

Tower Life Building is a Gothic Revival skyscraper in Downtown San Antonio that rises 30 stories with a distinctive eight-sided shape. The structure uses terra cotta and granite throughout its exterior, creating a strong visual presence in the cityscape.

The building opened in 1929 as Smith-Young Tower and held the title of tallest structure in the city for decades. It remained a dominant landmark until 1968, when a newer tower surpassed its height.

The building retains its original Gothic design details, including decorative gargoyles and green ceramic roof tiles that define its character. Visitors can see the crafted terra cotta facade that reflects the craftsmanship of the 1920s when it was built.

The building's entrance is readily accessible from street level, and the Downtown location is well served by public transportation. Keep in mind that renovation work is underway, so some interior areas may have limited access for visitors.

Sears opened its first San Antonio store here in 1929, making it a notable retail destination early in the city's commercial development. The store also has a footnote in American political history through a significant personal purchase.
