Hertzberg Clock, Street clock in downtown San Antonio, Texas.
The Hertzberg Clock is a street clock standing at the corner of North Saint Mary's and Houston streets in downtown San Antonio. This cast iron and brass timepiece is about 17 feet (5 meters) tall and operates through hand-wound weights and mechanical gears.
The timepiece was manufactured in 1878 by E. Howard & Co. of Boston and originally stood in front of Eli Hertzberg's jewelry store on Commerce Street. It was later moved to its present location at the corner of North Saint Mary's and Houston streets.
The name comes from the jewelry business of Eli Hertzberg, where the clock originally stood. It has remained a familiar landmark for generations of San Antonio residents and continues to be mentioned in everyday conversations about meeting places in downtown.
The clock is located in the heart of downtown and is easily reached on foot from many shops and restaurants. Visitors should note that the area is busy during the day and quieter at night.
The clock operates without electronics or electricity and relies solely on gravity and mechanical energy, much like a large grandfather clock mechanism. This traditional design makes it a working relic from the 1800s that continues to keep accurate time.
