Alamo Stadium

Alamo Stadium is a limestone structure in San Antonio's Monte Vista Historic District that holds about 23,000 spectators. It stands at the location of a former rock quarry in the heart of the city.

The Works Progress Administration built the stadium between 1938 and 1940 during the New Deal infrastructure development period in the United States. The project was part of efforts to create jobs and public facilities during the economic crisis.

Large tile murals created by the WPA Arts and Crafts Division adorn the stadium walls with scenes of sports and everyday life in San Antonio. These decorations show how art and athletics were woven into the community's daily experience.

The stadium at 760 Stadium Drive serves as the main venue for high school football and soccer games in the San Antonio Independent School District. Visitors should expect crowds during game seasons and plan their visit accordingly.

Native stone from the same quarry where the stadium was built was used in its construction, creating a natural link between the structure and the site. This use of local materials shows how New Deal architecture was connected to the land.
