San Antonio Zoo, Wildlife conservation center in San Antonio, United States
San Antonio Zoo is a zoological park in San Antonio, Texas, housing more than 3,500 animals from over 750 species found across the globe. The grounds cover 23 hectares (56 acres) with themed zones such as Big Cat Valley, African Savanna, and an aquarium displaying marine life.
Colonel George W. Brackenridge founded the zoo in 1914 by gathering bison, deer, monkeys, lions, and bears on land transferred to the city. The facility expanded over the decades, introducing new enclosures and conservation programs for threatened species.
The facility offers hands-on learning programs that bring school groups and families close to conservation efforts for endangered species. Many events allow visitors to meet keepers and learn how the animals are cared for each day.
The zoo opens daily year-round and provides shaded paths and rest areas for warm days. Guided tours and feeding times are posted daily, allowing visitors to plan their route accordingly.
The planned Congo Falls habitat will cover nearly one hectare (two acres) when completed in 2025, making it one of the largest gorilla enclosures in North America. The new environment will feature multiple levels and waterfalls that recreate conditions found in the Congo.
